Compression fractures of the back are broken vertebrae. Vertebrae are the bones of the spine.
Compression fractures caused by trauma to the spine can be very painful. Such trauma could come from a fall, a forceful jump, a car accident, or any event that stresses the spine past its breaking point. Compression fractures of the spine usually occur at the bottom part of the thoracic spine and the first vertebra of the lumbar spine. They can be extremely painful and can cause neurological disfunction such as leg weakness or disturbances in bowel or bladder function.
If your fractures are caused by a back injury, a surgeon may need to fuse some of your vertebrae together to relieve pain and pressure on your nerves. Recovery can take weeks or longer. You may need to wear a back brace and get plenty of bed rest.
